We assess memberships on a daily basis to ensure you are upgraded as soon as possible. As soon as your Status Credit balance reaches 1,000 and you have flown eight Eligible Sectors within the last 365 days, you will be automatically upgraded to Platinum membership.

To maintain Platinum membership you will need to earn 800 Status Credits and fly eight Eligible Sectors within your 12 month benefit period.

Travel benefits: Before you travel

  • Contact our Membership Contact Centre for Priority Phone Service. 

  • Select your seat at the time of booking or at check in. You can also select your seat after you have made a booking by calling the Virgin Australia Guest Contact Centre.

    • Select your preferred seat from reserved zones - as determined by your Velocity membership level and the fare class booked - on flights marketed and operated by Virgin Australia.
    • Add your Velocity membership number to your booking to ensure the appropriate seats, available for your level of membership, are displayed correctly. 
  • Platinum members and travelling companions in the same booking may select Economy X seating providing extra legroom and preferred overhead locker space on Domestic and International Short Haul flights operated by Virgin Australia.

    • Platinum members are entitled to four complimentary fare upgrades per year from a Freedom fare (fare classes Y, B, H, K, L) to a Business Class seat on Domestic, Trans Tasman or International Short Haul flights marketed and operated by Virgin Australia.
    • Members can also use their complimentary upgrades for guests travelling with them on the same flight.
    • Request an upgrade any time after you have booked your flight, up to two hours prior to scheduled departure time by contacting the Membership Contact Centre.
    • Requests can be made at any Virgin Australia Lounge or if departing from Hobart at Priority Check-in. Request any same-day upgrade on Virgin Australia operated Domestic flights up to 30 minutes prior to scheduled flight departure time.
    • Upgrades are subject to Business Class Reward Seat availability and to the Upgrade Cancellation and Amendment Policy.
    • Use Velocity Points to upgrade from a Getaway fare (fare classes T, Q, V, N, E), Elevate fare (fare classes Q, V, N, E), or a Freedom fare (fare classes Y, B, H, K, L) to a Business Class seat on domestic flights marketed and operated by Virgin Australia.
    • Use Velocity Points to upgrade from a Go Plus fare (fare classes T, Q, V, N, E), Getaway fare (fare classes T, Q, V, N, E) or Freedom fare (fare classes Y, B, H, K, L) to a Business Class seat on International Short Haul flights marketed and operated by Virgin Australia.
    • Upgrade online any time after you have booked your flight, up to two hours prior to flight departure time.
    • If you have made any special requests for your booking, or if your booking was originally made through a mobile device, at the airport or through the Guest Contact Centre, please contact our Membership Contact Centre at least two hours prior to the scheduled flight departure time to request the upgrade.
    • Platinum members can also request a same-day upgrade from Freedom, Elevate or Getaway fares to a Business Class seat on domestic flights at the Virgin Australia Lounge up to 30 minutes prior to scheduled flight departure time.

    • Exercise the ability to priority purchase up to two Economy seats on any sold out Virgin Australia marketed and operated flight when the seats cannot be booked online.
    • Requests must be made prior to midday of the day before travel (within the same time zone as the departure port) and bookings must be for a Full Economy 'Y' class fare.
    • Platinum member must be travelling on the booking.
    • Contact our Membership Contact Centre to purchase Economy seats.

  • Receive priority when waitlisted for upcoming Virgin Australia or Virgin Samoa marketed and operated flights. Subject to availability, priority will be allocated based on membership level.

    • Fast-track your domestic airport experience with Priority Check-in.
    • Priority Check-in is available through the Business Class or Priority counters when travelling on international flights operated by Virgin Australia.
  • Board when you like, when travelling on Virgin Australia operated flights, via our exclusive Priority or Business Class Boarding lanes at selected domestic and international airports.

    • Enjoy direct lounge access, optional valet parking, a private reception desk and a dedicated security screening point, when travelling with carry-on baggage only through Virgin Australia’s Brisbane terminal

    • Request to Fly Ahead to your destination on an earlier flight. Fly Ahead requests can be made for you and up to 3 guests on the same booking either at the airport (Platinum and Gold members) or via the Guest Contact Centre (Platinum members only).
    • Available when flying on any domestic Virgin Australia fare except a Getaway fare. 
    • When you make a Fly Ahead request at the airport, Fly Ahead is available for any earlier flight on the same day. When travelling with carry-on luggage only, make your request at the Virgin Australia Lounge or at the Service Desk (where available). When travelling with checked baggage, make your request to a Virgin Australia staff member at the Virgin Australia Priority Check-in counter.
    • As a Platinum member, you can additionally make a Fly Ahead request via the Guest Contact Centre
      - in respect of services between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, for any flight that is departing up to 2 hours prior to your booked flight; and
      - in respect of any other Virgin Australia operated domestic route, for the flight that is immediately prior to your booked flight.
    • For Fly Ahead requests made via the Guest Contact Centre, you must make the request at least 1 hour prior to the departure time of your desired flight.

    • For domestic and international short haul flights  you will receive a baggage allowance  based on your fare type and your membership level at the time of travel.  Find out more about baggage allowances.
    • When travelling to the USA with Virgin Australia you will receive one extra piece of checked baggage, up to 23 kg in Economy and up to 32 kg in Premium Economy and Business Class.
